The Wordle #1,940 answer for October 11, 2026 is:

How Wordle Works, in Case You're New

Wordle hands you six tries to land on one five-letter word, and treats every guess as a fresh clue. Every guess has to be a real word, and the feedback is color-coded: green for a correct letter in the correct spot, yellow for a correct letter in the wrong spot, and gray for a letter that isn't in the word at all. The puzzle resets at midnight in your time zone and is identical for every player that day, wherever they happen to be. From there it's a matter of reading those colors carefully enough to land on the answer within your six tries.

Choosing a Strong Starting Word

The best Wordle openers are built to maximize information, not to guess the answer outright. Think in terms of letter coverage, not guessing luck — a word built from E, A, R, T, O, I, N or S, with no repeats, simply teaches you more per guess. ROAST, TONER and IRATE all fit that bill.

Vowel placement is its own clue — once you know a vowel is in the word, testing it in a different position on your next guess can confirm or rule out several words at once.

However you open, the same endgame rule applies — never retest a confirmed gray, and always try a yellow letter somewhere new. Our Wordle Solver will happily do that arithmetic for you.

What Wordle number is today?

What is Wordle, and who made it?

Wordle is a daily word game made by software engineer Josh Wardle. He built an early private version in 2013, then released it publicly in 2021, after which The New York Times bought the game in early 2022 and continues to run it.

How many guesses do I get in Wordle?

Six guesses total. Every guess must be a real, accepted five-letter word — Wordle will reject non-words — and the tile colors update after each attempt to tell you which letters are right and where.

Does the Wordle answer change at midnight?

It does, at midnight — though that means midnight in each player's own time zone rather than one global cutoff, so the exact clock time it appears depends on where you are.

Is this site affiliated with Wordle or The New York Times?

No. This is an independent, unofficial fan page that reports the daily answer and hints. Wordle is a trademark owned and operated by The New York Times Company.

Can I play past Wordle puzzles?

Not for free through the main game — The New York Times pulled public access to old puzzles. They do run an official archive now, but it's locked behind an NYT Games subscription. This page's recent-answers table is a quick, free alternative.

What should I do if the hints don't help me finish the puzzle?

Type what you already know — your green, yellow and gray letters — into our free Wordle Solver, and it will filter a full word list down to only the entries that still fit your clues.

Is Wordle free to play?

Yes, the core daily puzzle is free for anyone with a New York Times account. Extra features like Wordle Bot's deeper statistics and the official puzzle archive are reserved for NYT Games subscribers.
