How Wordle Works, in Case You're New

If you've never played, Wordle is simple to pick up: guess a five-letter word, six times at most, and let the tile colors guide your next attempt. Green locks in a letter's position. Yellow says the letter's in the word but needs to move. Gray crosses it off the list entirely. The puzzle resets at midnight in your time zone and is identical for every player that day. From there it's a matter of reading those colors carefully enough to land on the answer within your six tries.

Choosing a Strong Starting Word

Pick a starting word that tests as many high-frequency letters as possible, with none repeated. In five-letter English words, E, A, R, T, O, I, N and S come up constantly, which is why words like SLATE, CRANE, TRACE and STARE show up on so many "best starter" lists. Vowel-heavy words such as ADIEU or AUDIO are a reasonable alternative, but they lean on vowels at the expense of consonants, and consonants tend to do more of the work separating similar-looking answers.

Common letter pairs are worth building around too — SH, ST, CR and CH kick off a large share of five-letter words, so a guess featuring one of them can eliminate or confirm several words in one shot.

After that, the standard rules apply: skip letters you've already confirmed are gray, and always try a yellow letter in a different spot rather than dropping it. Or let our Wordle Solver handle the filtering for you once you've entered what you know.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the Wordle answer for today?

Wordle #1,936, played on October 7, 2026, has the answer [RROVE]. It's shown inside the reveal box further down this page if you'd rather see it directly than work through the hints.

What Wordle number are we on today?

Today is Wordle #1,936, dated October 7, 2026. The count has gone up by exactly one every single day since the game's 2021 public launch.

Who created Wordle, and when?

Wordle was made by software engineer Josh Wardle. He built an early private version in 2013, then released it publicly in 2021, after which The New York Times bought the game in early 2022 and continues to run it.

How many guesses does Wordle allow?

Six, no more. Each guess needs to be a real, recognized five-letter word, and the tiles color-code your result afterward — green for right letter and spot, yellow for right letter and wrong spot, gray for not in the word at all.

Does a new Wordle drop at the same time for everyone?

No — it drops at midnight in each player's own local time zone, so the exact clock time it appears depends on where you are, even though everyone still gets the same word that calendar day.

Is this an official Wordle or New York Times page?

No. This page is an independent, unaffiliated source for the daily answer and hints. The New York Times owns and operates the actual Wordle game.

Can past Wordle puzzles still be played?

Not for free through the main game — The New York Times pulled public access to old puzzles. They do run an official archive now, but it's locked behind an NYT Games subscription. This page's recent-answers table is a quick, free alternative for the last several days.

None of the hints worked for me — what else can I try?

Enter the green, yellow and gray letters you've already confirmed into our free Wordle Solver, and it will narrow a complete word list down to only the words that still match.

Can different players get different Wordle answers on the same day?

No. Everyone is given the same word for a given calendar day in their own time zone — what varies is only the clock time the puzzle unlocks locally, never which word it is.
